Upgrade!

Thursday, August 27, 2009 by Samantha Clarke

It's official. We've moved to the next level. Another rung on the ladder something or other... My professor even said, and I quote: "We may make a political scientist out of you yet!" (which is very close to rocket science IMO)

Fall 2009 is the first semester of both Dr3 and my post graduate studies. Yes, we've been blessed by God Almighty with the gifts and the guts to DO IT.

The gifts given have little to do with it though. I've found the guts which include persistence, motivation, hard work, diligence, with a dash of SUPPORT can make all the difference. I ask that each and everyone that is reading these words PRAY FOR US.

Thanks!

Also the inevitable has finally taken place. Those that are closest to me know that my photo obsession is one that I've been plagued with for quite some time now. The few that couldn’t stand it have come around and have learned to accept it. Since none of my loved ones have tried to intervene, I've decided to see how far I can go with my picture taking. I have upgraded my equipment from this camera to this one and I feel like it's time to see what I'm capable of. Plainly, I'm building my portfolio in hopes that I'll be able to have a strong set of photos that characterize me as a photographer.

Wow. There, I said it. I'm nervous, but I feel like I can't lose. I enjoy photography so much that I can live with having one fan. I really just want to learn as much as I can from as many people as I can.

Keep swinging by TheOnlyNumber as I will use the blog to post my favorites and of course to get your opinions. You can subscribe by clicking the SUBSCRIBE link below or filling your email address in the box on the right hand panel. I'll post these with the header "Her Passion" along with my pictures and some info about how the shoot went down or what inspired me to take the photos. Your comments are so very welcome.

ps. My laptop is in tip top shape. No more cracked LCD for me! (which was apparently toxic as the black oozing out was mercury)

Her Thoughts: The Lion of the Senate, Ted Kennedy dies

Wednesday, August 26, 2009 by Samantha Clarke

The Massachusetts Democratic Senator passed away yesterday of brain cancer. He's affected the lives of all Americans as over 300 bills that he wrote were enacted into law including the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act of 1986 and Civil Rights Act of 1991. Learn more about Ted Kennedy here.

Her Review: The Harder They Come @ The Canon Theatre

Sunday, August 23, 2009 by Samantha Clarke

I'm so glad I was able to see The Harder They Come while it was here in Toronto. As a Canadian with Jamaican heritage it was refreshing to see a such an iconic story brought to life on stage. My mom and I had a great time at the show. Never before have I felt so involved with what was going on on stage.

Before it all started the cast included the audience as they were filing into their seats. While staying in character, the actors spoke and introduced themselves- a pleasant experience for most I'm sure. Some of the cast were on stage singing and dancing as they celebrated the life of the hero, Ivanhoe Martin. Then at intermission one of the characters announced we had a 15 minute ganja break. Ha-ha! (not literally of course) The ending was another array of songs and the audience then stood and sang and danced along. I've never experienced anything like it in a theater.

I didn't get the chance to watch the famous film starring reggae great Jimmy Cliff prior to attending the play to be able to compare the two, but I hope to watch it soon.

If this play makes it to a city near you I strongly suggest you attend.

Her Cause: Support Lakeisha Harvey for Miss Black Georgia 2010

Tuesday, August 18, 2009 by Samantha Clarke

My good friend Keisha is running for Miss Black Georgia USA in the 2010 competition and needs our support!

Let me start by saying that this young lady is an amazing individual that has gone above and beyond the call of duty. She talks the talk AND walks the walk; a rarity these days. As a living kidney donor, she has experienced first-hand the incredible impact one can have on another life. Her goal is to "empower, educate and enable people with chronic kidney disease (CKD), transplant recipients, donors and family members to become effective advocates on issues related to their health, and encourage people to become potential living donors and help save the lives of others."

As a candidate for the crown, Keisha needs to raise funds for the Royal Readers Fundraising Campaign. This program offers much needed classroom books to elementary and middle schools across Georgia and they also supply book baskets for teen mothers.

Please donate $1 or more via PayPal by clicking on the image below:

The pageant will be held on November 14 at 7 pm in Atlanta, GA. Check out Miss Black Georgia's website or contact Keisha at Lakeisha_Harvey@hotmail.com for more details.

GOOD LUCK KEISHA!!! You are a shining example to us all.

Her Thoughts: Laptop down

Monday, August 10, 2009 by Samantha Clarke

Check it out...

I always enjoy coming to Atlanta and was expecting to blog as per usual. However, after waking up to a cracked laptop screen a few days ago, it's been slightly hard to muster the courage to use it. (I'm currently on Dr3's) I cringe everytime I turn it on. Just know that I haven't let it stop me from smiling. When it happened I pouted for a little, but quickly took a deep breath and decided to GET OVER IT. It's just a 'thing' and can be replaced.

My advice is this: NEVER EVER leave your laptop on the floor.

xo,
S

Her Insight: Madonna

Wednesday, August 5, 2009 by Samantha Clarke

Better to live one year as a tiger, than a hundred as a sheep.

The wise words of Madonna.
